Telegram, the popular messaging app known for its focus on privacy, is experimenting with a new method to reward users with a month of free premium subscription. They have recently launched a program called ‘Peer-to-Peer’ login (P2PL) that enables users to volunteer their phone numbers to send SMS login codes to others in exchange for premium subscriptions.Â
While this may seem like a straightforward method to enjoy premium features without cost, there are significant drawbacks to consider.
By participating in the program, Telegram users agree to share their phone numbers to send up to 150 SMS containing login codes to other users. In exchange, participants receive a gift code redeemable for one month of premium subscription. However, users must bear any associated charges from network providers, as Telegram disclaims any responsibility for reimbursement.
Currently, this program is only available to a select group of Android users in specific regions. Telegram states that this initiative aims to simplify the login process for users in certain areas by facilitating the delivery of login codes.
Initially, this program might seem like a convenient method to save money. However, Telegram warns that each time your phone number is utilized to transmit a one-time password (OTP), it becomes visible to the recipient.
A closer examination reveals potential privacy risks. Despite Telegram’s assurances, your phone number remains visible to recipients each time it is used to send an OTP. The platform’s terms and conditions emphasize that the company assumes no liability for harassment, inconveniences, or harm arising from unauthorized actions by users who gain access to your phone number through P2PL.
Furthermore, there appears to be no mechanism to prevent recipients from accessing and contacting your phone number. As a result, participants risk exposure to unwanted communication, including spam calls and texts from unfamiliar numbers.
Another significant drawback of this approach is the potential for participants to encounter problems or incur additional charges from mobile service providers due to possible violations of usage terms.Â
All these things need to be taken into consideration before joining Telegram’s offer. However, if you are not concerned about your number being shared, or additional network fees, then this might not be a concern for you.
Given these factors, it’s important to proceed with caution and fully assess the consequences before taking advantage of the tempting opportunity provided by Telegram’s complimentary premium subscriptions.
