Spencer Tracy was born on 5th April 1900, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to parents John Edward Tracy and Caroline Brown. Growing up in a Catholic household, his father worked as a truck salesman, while his mother belonged to a wealthy family. Tracy also had an older brother named Caroll, whom he grew up with.
As for education, Tracy changed several schools during his childhood, before joining Ripon College in Wisconsin. There, he discovered his passion for theatre, causing his love for acting to grow. During his time in college, he performed in various plays. Later, he transferred to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts to study acting professionally.
Spencer Tracy’s acting career began on stage. From 1923-1930, he worked in stock theatre companies and participated in various plays across the nation. His big break in theatre came when he got the opportunity to appear in the Broadway play The Last Mile in 1930. They helped him earn critical acclaim and grab the attention of Hollywood producers.
The same year, Tracy signed a contract with Fox Film Corporation and made his film debut in Up the River. Although the film was a moderate success, Tracy was praised for his performance. During the early 1930s, he appeared in several movies, but most of them did not perform well.
Tracy rose to fame after he joined Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) in 1935. There, he got the chance to showcase his talent as an actor and appear in films like The Murder Man, and Whipsaw. Tracy’s reputation in the industry was further enhanced after he won back-to-back Academy Awards for Best Actor. With his incredible acting skills, Tracy quickly became a favourite among the audience.
Spencer Tracy married Louise Treadwell in 1923. The couple had two children, including John and Susie. However, their marriage was rough and the two lived separately for many years. Despite the difficulties, Tracy never divorced.
Tracy passed away due to a heart attack in 1967 at the age of 67. He left behind a legacy that everyone looks up to.
