Early Life
Psy’s birth name is Park Jae-Sang and he was born in Gangnam, South Korea on December 31, 1977, to his parents Park Won-Ho and Kim Young-Hee. Both of his parents have an established career, which explains why Psy had an affluent life growing up. His father worked as the chairman of DI Corporation while his mother was an established restaurateur.
Growing up, Psy graduated from Sehwa High School but wasn’t the biggest fan of his school. However, most of his peers referred to him as the “class clown,” who kept everyone entertained.
He had a strong liking towards music, especially after encountering Queen and their song Bohemian Rhapsody. For his higher education, Psy enrolled in Boston University but dropped out soon after. Instead, he used his tuition money to buy musical equipment.
Career
Psy’s career was not without its challenges. His early lyrics often courted controversy due to their satirical and sometimes provocative nature. However, he persevered, honing his craft and evolving his style.
The turning point came in 2012 with the release of “Gangnam Style.” The song’s infectious melody, playful choreography, and humorous music video quickly went viral, amassing billions of views and becoming the first YouTube video to reach that milestone. “Gangnam Style” propelled Psy to unprecedented levels of fame, landing him international collaborations with artists like Snoop Dogg and Madonna.
He embarked on world tours, performing to sold-out crowds in countries across the globe. While subsequent singles didn’t quite replicate the viral success of “Gangnam Style,” Psy continued to release commercially successful music and maintained a strong presence in the Korean music scene. In 2018, he established his music label, P Nation, to nurture new talent and showcase diverse musical styles.
Personal Life
Beyond the stage, Psy leads a relatively private life. He married his longtime girlfriend Yoo Hye-yeon in 2003, and they have twin daughters. He reportedly resides in a luxurious apartment in Gangnam district, the very location that inspired his most famous song.
Net Worth
With his massive global success and hit records, Psy has acquired an impressive net worth of $65 million. This impressive sum largely stems from the global success of “Gangnam Style,” which generated revenue through YouTube views, music sales, endorsements, and merchandise. Furthermore, he keeps on earning through his tours, merch sales, and also the brand endorsements that he does with leading brands on his socials.
