Mark Duplass has a new TV project titled Penelope, coming out soon. For now, it’s only confirmed for the U.S., but it might be available in other countries later.
Penelope is a coming-of-age series, which means it focuses on the personal growth and experiences of a young person. In the lead role, we have Megan Stott, who is known for her role in Little Fires Everywhere. The show also features Auston Abrams and Krisha Fairchild, but details about their roles haven’t been revealed yet.
This series is part of Mark Duplass’s new focus on making indie television. The story revolves around Penelope who feels out of place in her modern life. She decides to leave it all behind and live in the wilds of Washington. As she adapts to her new environment, she learns important lessons about life and relationships.
Produced by Duplass Brothers Productions (DBP), Penelope is set to release on Netflix on 24th September 2024, only in the U.S. At the time of writing, it is not clear if the show will be available for a global audience.
This brand-new young adult series is created by Mark Duplass in association with Mel Eslyn. The first episode of the show was premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. Penelope has a total of eight episodes which can be streamed on Netflix from 24th September onwards.
The president of DBP, Mel Eslyn, not only directed the series but also served as a showrunner. She co-wrote the show with Mark Duplass during the pandemic. Mark’s brother, Jay Duplass, is an executive producer, along with Shuli Harel.
DBP has a strong track record with Netflix. They previously produced the documentary series Wild Wild Country, which won an Emmy in 2018. They also created other projects like Paddleton, American Conspiracy: The Octopus Murders, and Evil Genius. Mark Duplass is also known for his acting roles in Your Sister’s Sister, The Morning Show, and Togetherness.
As mentioned before, the show stars Megan Stott as the main character, Penelope. According to the official description, Penelope is a 16-year-old girl who feels completely out of place in her current life. She decides to leave everything behind, including her family, and heads into the wilds of Washington State. As she builds a new life in the wilderness, she is faced with the challenges of growing up.
That being said, this project is part of their new approach to indie television. In an interview with Variety in March, Duplass explained that their company is creating multiple series on their own, without relying on funding from larger studios. They are doing so to maintain creative control and global rights. He also mentioned that if a series like Penelope performs well, it could lead to a longer license agreement.
The cast of Penelope is yet to be revealed. As of now, they have only revealed the main characters. Here’s a brief rundown of the names:
