Nayib Bukele was born on July 24, 1981 in El Salvador. His parents are named Olga Ortez de Bukele and Armando Bukele. Nayib was raised in a pretty well-off family alongside his four siblings.
The major reason behind Nayib’s lavish childhood was because of his father, who was a successful entrepreneur and owned a variety of businesses across different niches like textiles, pharma, medicine, etc.
There isn’t much information about Nayib’s school life but given the kind of household he grew up in, it is safe to assume that he received the best education. Besides that, Nayib was enrolled in the Jesuit Central American University for a law degree but he dropped out.
Nayib is married to Gabriela Rodriguez, who is a ballet dancer, teacher, and psychologist by profession. She is currently serving as the First Lady of El Salvador. They are proud parents to one child.
After dropping out of school, Nayib was ready to follow his father and take over the business sphere and manage things alongside his father. While he did that for a while, managing things around, Nayib was later attracted to the prospect of politics.
His political journey started in 2012 when he was elected the mayor of Nuevo Cuscatlán. He was celebrated during that time, thanks to the positive shifts he brought to society by introducing scholarships and making the area a lot safer for the residents.
Later in 2015, he was elected the mayor of San Salvador. However, after a lot of miscommunication and conflicts, Nayib was let go from his political party FMLN in 2017. He turned things around completely and ended up becoming the President of the country in 2019.
The biggest breakthrough in his political career came when he announced in 2021 that El Salvador would use Bitcoin as an official currency in the country, making it the first country in the world to do so.
With the kind of dominance that Nayib has made with his political career, it isn’t even a question that he is a millionaire. As of 2024, he has an estimated net worth of $2 million, the majority of which comes from his political career. He ventured into businesses initially, which paid off well too.
Nayib Bukele started his political career with the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN), but he was expelled from the party in 2017. He then founded his political party, Nuevas Ideas (New Ideas), which he used to run for the presidency.
Nayib Bukele won the presidential election in El Salvador in February 2019 and assumed office on June 1, 2019.
Nayib Bukele has been quite fond of Bitcoin. In 2021, El Salvador became the first country that legalized Bitcoin as a legal tender.
