Jim Backus was born on 25th February 1913, in Cleveland, Ohio, to parents Daisy Taylor Backus and Russell Gould Backus. Growing up in a well-to-do family, he attended the prestigious Shaw High School. From an early age, Jim had an interest in the performing arts. After high school, he completed his graduation from University School in Ohio.
Despite his passion for acting, Jim struggled to find his way into the industry. Instead of supporting his passion, his family expected him to follow a more conventional career. However, faith had different plans for Backus.
Jim Backus started his career in radio during the 1940s. His unique voice made him a natural for voice acting. One of his early successes was his role in the radio show The Alan Young Show, where he played a wealthy character.
