George Campbell Scott was born on 18th October 1927, in Wise, Virginia, to parents Helena Agnes and Gerald Dewey Scott. However, his mother passed away when he was just eight years old, and was raised by his father, who worked as an executive at that time.

Growing up in Detroit, Michigan, Scott was aspired to become a writer. But after high school, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps at the age of 17. After getting discharged from the military, he attended the University of Missouri and studied journalism and drama.
