Charles Kushner was born on 16th May 1954, in Elizabeth, New Jersey to Jewish parents who were Holocaust survivors. His parents were Rae Kushner and Joseph Berkowitz. His father had immigrated to the United States after World War II and worked as a builder and real estate investor. Charles was exposed to the real estate world at an early age because of his father’s profession.
Charles earned his undergraduate degree from Hofstra University. Later, he attended the New York University School of Law, where he obtained his Juris Doctor degree. His legal background was an asset to the family’s real estate business. After completing his education, he started working alongside his father and helped him grow the family’s real estate holdings.
Charles Kushner officially founded Kushner Companies in 1985. Under his leadership, the company expanded rapidly and became a major player in the New Jersey and New York markets. The company was involved in managing, acquiring, and developing commercial, residential, and industrial properties.
One of the most notable acquisitions by the company was the purchase of the 666 Fifth Avenue building in Manhattan in 2007. The purchase of this property proved to be a major move for the Kushner family. It helped them rise higher in the New York real estate scene.
However, Charles Kushner’s career took a dramatic turn in 2004 when he was investigated for illegal campaign contributions, witness tampering, and tax evasion. He was accused of making illegal donations through his real estate company. On top of that, he attempted to interfere with the investigation by hiring a prostitute to seduce his brother-in-law, who was cooperating with authorities.
These actions led to his arrest and he pled guilty in 2005. He was sentenced to two years in prison and was disbarred from practising law. After his release, Charles Kushner returned to his real estate business, but he kept a lower profile.
Charles Kushner is married to Seryl Kushner, and together they have four children. The Kushner family is well-known for their connections to politics and business, particularly because of his son, Jared Kushner’s marriage to Ivanka Trump, the daughter of former U.S. President Donald Trump.
