According to reports, Apple is currently working on in-display Touch ID for their new iPhone line-up. Although the tech giant has not revealed any details on their latest development, a tipster revealed on Twitter that the company may introduce in-display Touch ID in their new iPhone line-up.
According to earlier reports, Apple was planning to introduce its new iPhone models with an in-display Touch ID. But iPhone 12 was unveiled last week and it has the Face ID.
The tipster tweeted “MESA uts for iPhone.” Although the post didn’t reveal any details, the tipster claimed that MESA means Touch ID and uts is short for “under the screen.” Based on this tweet, we can expect Apple to have started working on their in-display Touch ID.
Ming-Chi Kuo analyst at Apple, mentioned in a note sent to investors said that the company is planning to bring back their Touch ID feature to the new iPhone models in 2021. According to him, the 2021 iPhone models would have both in-display Touch ID and Face ID. If this is to be believed, then iPhone 13 family will be the one to get this feature first and not iPhone 12 which is released this year.
According to a Bloomberg report last year, the company was working on its in-screen fingerprint sensing technology. The report mentioned that the feature would be included in the 2020 iPhone models. However, this didn’t happen.
Another report by LetsGoDigital claimed that 2020 iPhone models would ditch Face ID and would be equipped with under-display Touch ID. However, that didn’t happen either. The iPhone 12 released last week has the Face ID.
Apple is using a tweaked version of Qualcomm’s 3D Sonic sensor to develop an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensing technology for the future iPhone models. It is said that this feature could be limited to just one model which means the other models will still have the Face ID.
Apple Face ID was introduced with iPhone X back in 2017. Since then it has become a standalone system on iPhones. It is considered to be one of the best biometric systems by Apple. Earlier this year Apple brought back their Touch ID feature with the launch of the iPhone SE 2020.
According to reports, the new in-display Touch ID would be introduced with iPhone 2021 models. But as of now, the company has not declared anything.
