A Traveler’s Guide to Driving Around Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia is a country that is perfect for road trips because of its vast deserts, wild green mountains, and stunning coastline. There are many opportunities to go outside and soak in the rainbow of feelings and beauty that it offers. Take trips outdoors, visit old towns, and spend your days admiring the scenery, culture, and vibrant cosmopolitanism.

The three cities of Riyadh, Jeddah, and Dammam are excellent places to learn about the history and culture of the area while also getting a glimpse of contemporary Saudi life. They also offer a priceless experience. There are many airlines connecting Saudi Arabia’s major cities, so now is a great time to get a cheap Jeddah to Dammam flight to start exploring the country.

Travel at your own pace and stop to soak up the sun on sandy beaches, browse real souqs, or stuff yourself with mouth-watering local food. There is a route that fits you if you’re a history enthusiast, an outdoor adventurer, a family traveller, or a culture vulture. The allure of Arabia is unequalled in other countries.

But you’ll want to be ready before you pack your bags in the trunk and set off on the road. Here, regardless of the route you choose, we provide a useful reference to the equipment and advice necessary for a memorable road trip.

Getting started

Plan your route

Choosing your vacation is the first thing on the list. You should have a general itinerary for your days, regardless of whether you wish to cruise between towns or drive south along the Red Sea coast. Plan your itinerary based on your nightly lodging and any anchor sites (such as well-known landmarks or must-see locations), then leave the remaining distance open for impromptu diversions. If anything piques your interest, deviate from your plan and investigate it. Unplanned excursions may sometimes be the finest ones.

Rent a car

The simplest way to travel by road is to rent a car. There are many different automobile rental firms in Saudi Arabia, and hiring a car is an easy process. Drivers need to have their licence for a period of time exceeding one year and be at least 25 years old. Residents of Saudi Arabia must have a valid ID and driver’s licence, while visitors must have their passport.

Foreign renters are subject to different rules, so be sure to verify in advance with the hiring company about the documents required. Check that the insurance coverage includes several drivers if you intend to travel in shifts, and if you intend to go off-road, think about getting a 4WD vehicle.

Check your car’s health

A well-maintained automobile is necessary for comfortable travel. If you want to drive yourself, make sure the engine, brakes, lights, batteries, and tyre pressure are all in excellent working condition. Don’t forget to check the oil as well as the tyre pressure. It’s also a good idea to have an emergency kit in your car. Having extra jump cables, keys, and a charger for your batteries may make the difference between a quick stop and a disastrous day.

Planning is essential

Having more time for sightseeing means less time spent operating a vehicle. You may avoid traffic, see the sites during the day, and get off the highway after dark if you get an early start in the morning. Take turns driving or use fuel breaks to break up lengthy lengths of time. And make sure you have backup directions if you intend to deviate from the major paths. GPS works well for directions, but it might not always function in rural or off-road locations. Keep a print or offline map handy just in case.

What to pack

By travelling light, you’ll have less baggage to carry around each night and more space in the luggage compartment to store mementoes. A pack containing the following items should be kept handy for the trip: antibacterial wipes, gloves and face masks, sunglasses, sunscreen, a first aid kit, a cooler filled with water and food, and a phone charger. In addition, we suggest packing a towel and bathing suit for any impromptu swimming.

Arrange the songs in your playlist.

You won’t get bored in Saudi Arabia thanks to its stunning environment, but the experience is enhanced by well-chosen music. To keep you interested, mix in various podcasts and audiobooks with the music, depending on your interests. Instead of relying on mobile data for continuous listening, download them.

Driving with children

Effective car trips with children need preparation. A selection of sports and other amusements may make the miles pass quickly and stop you from thinking, “Are we there yet?” all the time. Apart from classic board games, audiobook stories, tables, and music, road games are also a terrific way to kill time. Families of all ages may participate in games such as I Spy, Name That Song, and 21 Questions. Pass the munchies if everything else fails.

Carry cash

Always have enough cash on you in case of emergencies or for unforeseen detours into small towns. You can also use it for roadside snack stops and ATM visits.

Consult a native

While reviews are useful, local suggestions are preferable. Asking a local is the best method to discover an undiscovered gem of a dining establishment or unearth a magnificent vista. Since Saudis are known for being amiable and welcoming, don’t be shy about striking up a discussion. It could take you to the most fruitful place you’ve visited thus far.

Savour the journey

Travelling is an experience in and of itself. Take advantage of the opportunity to stop for pictures, pass through charming towns, or simply take in the mountains. Road trips give you the freedom to see and discover all that the world has to offer. Additionally, show consideration for others as you go. Be considerate of other drivers, refrain from littering, and respect local culture and communities.
