Tank Abbott was born on 26th April 1965, in Huntington Beach, California. Growing up in a rough neighbourhood, he learned to defend himself at an early age. He was only nine years old when he started practising wrestling and continued to work on his skills in high school.
Abbott attended Cypress College, where he competed in wrestling competitions and earned CCCAA All-American honours. Later, he transferred to California State University and graduated with a degree in history.
