I'm always ready to say great things about China's media industry, seeing as I have spent more than a few trips to China talking about that very thing. But there is always one annoying glitch in the whole works, especially regarding online media.
Regulation is so confused and mano et mano that the government seems to be making more of a mess of things than it is helping them along. Take this conversation about blogging at Danwei as an example.
Up until about three years ago, it seemed the government didn't really think too much about the Internet and how to regulate it. Now, every bureaucrat that wants to secure funding in this planned economy gone (or going) amuck wants to stick his or her stamp of authority into the mess, whether or not said bureaucrat has any experience or knowledge about how the thing works.
